Exploring Beijing

We're so glad you're making the trip. Beijing is extraordinary, and there's far more to see than any one visit can hold. Here's where to begin.

01 ·

The Icons

The Forbidden City & Tiananmen
Among the most awe-inspiring places on earth. Daily caps apply — book online well in advance. Tiananmen sits at the doorstep of the Mandarin Oriental Qianmen.
The Great Wall — Mutianyu
Less crowded than Badaling, beautifully restored, set in forested hills. About 90 minutes from the city. Plan a half or full day.
The Temple of Heaven
Stunning Ming-dynasty architecture in a serene park. Best at dawn, when locals gather for tai chi and music.
The Summer Palace
A serene imperial garden and lakeside retreat. Beautiful in every season. Allow at least half a day.
02 ·

A different side

Qianmen Street & the Hutongs
You'll be steps from one of Beijing's oldest pedestrian streets. Wander into Dashilar's hutongs for a glimpse of old Beijing.
798 Art District
A former industrial complex, now one of Asia's most vibrant contemporary art scenes. Great galleries, coffee, design studios.
Lama Temple
One of Beijing's most important Tibetan Buddhist temples. Ornate, atmospheric, genuinely moving.
03 ·

Where to eat

Peking Duck
Da Dong is the modern, theatrical choice. Quanjude is the classic institution.
Dumplings & noodles
Side streets around Qianmen and Wangfujing for the best local spots.
Wangfujing Snack Street
Every kind of street snack imaginable. Worth the walk-through.
TipMajor attractions — including the Forbidden City — require advance online booking and have daily visitor caps. Reserve as soon as your dates are set, or ask your hotel concierge.
